Choosing Gratitude by Nancy Leigh DeMoss

True gratitude is not an incidental ingredient in the Christian's life. It's a crucial one. It's a grace-infused commitment each of us chooses . . . and it's totally worth it! Nancy Leigh DeMoss explores the biblical and practical aspects of what makes gratitude truly Christian. Discover how it makes life, even with all its bumps and bruises, a joy to behold.

Gratitude is a choice. If we fail to chose it, by default we choose ingratitude. And once allowed into the heart, ingratitude does not come by itself, but with other seedy companions that only succeed in stealing joy.

Derived from a popular Revive Our Hearts radio series, Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy challenges and equips the reader to live a life of intention, a life based on thankfulness for the freedom Christ has provided and for the blessings of others.

By intentionally thanking God and others, bitterness and entitlement are replaced with joy and the humble realization of just how undeserving we really are.

To not choose gratitude is more costly than we usually realize. When we do choose a lifestyle of heartfelt, humble gratitude, we are mindful of the benefits received from our gracious Savior and those He has placed around us, and our joy becomes full.

My Thoughts:
Are you a grateful person? Most of us probably think we are. But reading this book will open your eyes to a whole new probable reality. Most likely, we are not! I know I saw my (un)grateful heart in a whole new light. Complaining about seemingly insignificant things doesn't seem to really matter. Or does it?
Almost every year, since I first bought this book at a fall library book sale, I have read and re-read it, or the devotionals in the back, because honestly, as thankful as I may think I am... Sometimes, I am not! This book helps me put things back in perspective...

Nancy gives Scripture verse and reasons for why we should live as thankful people. And not just thankful for our blessings, but even for those hard days, sickness, and other things that seem awful. "Why should I do that?" you may ask. Because the Bible commands it!! Nothing we have, has been gotten because we deserve it. Everything is a gift from the Almighty. Without Him we would be nothing and for that we need to give thanks!

Nancy helps you start a list of physical blessings, spiritual blessings, people, and other things to give thanks for. She suggest things as simple as your toothbrush. All you have to do is start looking around, you will simply be amazed.  This book is worth the read!! Who knows, you may just finish it a changed person.

If all you had tomorrow, was what you gave thanks for today, what would you have?
That's a pretty sobering thought!

This month's focus is on giving thanks and thanks living!

  1. We need to give thanks to God at all times of the year. I know people who have gratitude journals and that is a great idea. I am thankful for paper and writing utensils and also, the ability to type on the computer. :-)

    1. Melissa,
I like keeping a gratitude journal. I go through spurts of writing daily or maybe a couple times a week or month. Kind of depends on how busy the schedule is, but it helps to look back and see all those blessing written down.
