Deep Shadows by Vannetta Chapman

Deep Shadows is the first book in Vannetta Chapman's newest series, The Remnant.

Life in Abney, Texas, is predictable and safe--until the night a massive solar flare wipes out all modern technology. Shelby Sparks, novelist and single mom, had one goal: to provide for her diabetic son. In the wake of this global disaster, her mission hasn't changed. Only now, medication is a priceless commodity and the future resembles an apocalyptic nightmare.

Max Berkman and Shelby were once sweethearts, but he lost his chance at claiming her love years ago. When the abrupt loss of power ushers him into a leadership role, he rises to the occasion. But his
highest priority--to keep Shelby and her son safe--could prove to be the biggest challenge of all.

As the brilliant northern lights give way to deep shadows, Max and Shelby's faith will be tested like never before. Only one rule remains: Find a way to survive.

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this book, even though, it wasn't just a fast page turner for me. In spite of that fact though, the story line was captivating, as author Vannetta Chapman takes us on a futuristic journey of solar flares, power outages, and a return to a past way of life.  As Vannetta mentions at the end of the book, solar flares are actually possible, and the book is somewhat realistic, as far as, the fact that it could happen. She also includes some really helpful preparation tips in case you were caught in an emergency.

Shelby and Max have been friends for years, high school sweethearts at one point in time, and together on a hike when the solar flares hit. They don't live in Alaska where the Northern lights can be seen, but on this day, they witness them as far south as Texas. Frightened they head back to their town which is already in the beginning stages of disarray. Shelby's son Carter is a diabetic and on insulin. Power outages are everywhere, and modern technology is a joke (of the now past). How will they survive? All Shelby knows is that she will do whatever it takes to keep Carter alive, and Max will do whatever he can to see they are both taken care of. But when the situation spirals out of control, and Shelby is bent on taking care of herself, what can he do?

As they learn a whole new lifestyle and their small town attempts to make due under the current conditions, they also learn the value of friends and family, and most importantly faith. The main goal is currently - survival - and hopefully not just their own. I enjoyed reading about the way the town pulled together to weather the tragedy. How they got creative with coping and coming up with ways to fill in the gaps. I enjoyed Vannetta's take on faith and God's sovereignty in all that happened.

This book ends well, but also leaves a bit of a cliffhanger to encourage you to read number two in the series, which of course I am eagerly awaiting the release of when the time comes.

I received a copy of this book from Harvest House in exchange for my honest opinion. I was also blessed to win one from the author.
