Promises In the Dark

Promises in the Dark: Walking with Those in Need without Losing Heart - By: Eric McLaughlin
Promises in the Dark by Dr. Eric McLaughlin strengthens the hearts of readers to persevere in God's calling to walk with those in need. As a missionary doctor in Africa, McLaughlin knows how walking closely with those who suffer and bearing others' burdens can easily lead to burnout or cynicism-unless we find the path to perseverance that the Lord provides.
This resource explores how to find both calling and hope, living in the tension between a difficult present and God's promises of renewal, how to cope with despair and futility, the importance of the suffering God for those who suffer, and how the manifestations of God bring life into a dying world.
McLaughlin explores how to endure in such a yet-to-be-redeemed world as ours, which is full of tragedy and heartache, pointing to God's promises.

My Thoughts:
I wanted to read this book because I myself struggle at times with burnout, and discouragement from watching those who are suffering and/or needy, often persevere in the same lifestyle in-spite of a chance to change. Then there are those who may not be able or in a position to choose differently. It's easy to become cynical and forget to believe God's promises.

This book is a story of Dr Eric's real life experiences in the US as well as on the mission field in Africa. There are some hard to read chapters that truly demonstrate the extent of suffering and sadness in this life. Many times he was overcome by hopeless feelings, worthlessness, and the struggle to keep hoping amidst all the devastation. I loved that often he mentions, even on a bad day, when possibly many had died, there were these small glimpses of Hope, or God's goodness. That was encouraging!

He talked about our responsibility to our fellowmen, as our brothers keepers being a choice. He discussed the love of Jesus, his compassion, and even with all his goodness, he was killed. Yet through it all there's a promise being fulfilled. We may not see it now.... We may never see it, but God is faithful and our compassion and service is not in vain.

I felt like this book was very useful to me.
I was provided with a free copy courtesy of the publisher. All opinions are my own and I was not asked to give a positive review.
