Her daddy went away to fight for our country. And he came home changed.
What’s a young family to do when a parent is injured? How might they respond to curiosity?
In this tender account based on her childhood experiences, beloved author Tara McClary Reeves shares how her family adapted to the extensive physical losses her father, Marine Corps Lieutenant Clebe McClary, sustained.
With warmth and humor, this book encourages children and spouses facing similar trials to cherish the gift of family. To hold on to faith. And to choose to be loving heroes on the home front.

My Take:
I just loved this book!! What a sweet beautiful way to honor and present a war-torn veteran. It's such a non-frightening look at what can happen when daddies go off to war or to defend our country - whether it be war or just service to our nation. Many times going to war can change people, both inwardly and outwardly. For those of us who have not had to go to war, we may struggle with understanding these changes, especially children.
This book provides a wonderful way to address the possibility and actuality of that happening with love, pride, and a sense of humor. I also appreciated the fact that in the end, the mother was also deemed a hero - not just the war veteran, as it was she who took care of her husband when he returned home. It also stresses the importance and heroism of patriotism and serving our nation as a position of honor. That those who serve are not losing their lives (or limbs) but choosing to give them. What an awesome way to encourage children to appreciate and respect those who have chosen to serve.
I can't say enough good things about this book and would highly recommend that you get a copy! My copy was provided by Icon Media Group. I was not asked or required to review it positively.

Thank you for sharing this book. I have been looking for a similar book for my daughter. Her husband is military and she also provides day care for other military families.
ReplyDeleteI was fortunate my father served away from the battle lines. We have a strong military tradition in our family. I was married to two service men.
I pray this book ministers to the families it reaches.
I am so glad this post found you then! My father was a missionary, not a military man, but several of my uncles and grandfather were military men. And I am very proud of my heritage and of them.
