Joyful Surrender by Elisabeth Elliot

In our age of instant gratification and if-it-feels-good-do-it attitudes, self-discipline is hardly a popular notion. Yet it may be one of the most important lost virtues of our time. In Joyful Surrender, former missionary and beloved author Elisabeth Elliot offers her understanding of discipline and its value for people of all times. She shows readers how to:
  • discipline the mind, body, possessions, time, and feelings
  • overcome anxiety
  • change poor habits and attitudes
  • trust God in times of trial and hardship
  • let Christ have control in all areas of life
  • Elliot masterfully and gently takes readers through Scripture, personal stories, and incisive observations of the world around her to help them discover the understanding that our fulfillment as human beings depends on our answer to God's call to obedience.

Meet Elisabeth Elliot:  (1926-2015)  one of the most perceptive and popular Christian writers of the last century. The author of more than 20 books, including Passion and Purity and The Journals of Jim Elliot, Elliot offered guidance and encouragement to millions of readers worldwide.

    My Thoughts:
This book definitely has a lot of food for thought. It’s very convicting and some people may not really like the content of this book, because it pricks the heart. I found it very useful for growing in my spiritual life especially the disciplines of the body and the mind that Elisabeth talks about.

I have always admired Elisabeth's strength and determination in her Christian life. In this book, she is humble but very forward. Her use of words and concepts isn't written in a way that makes you comfortable or gives you a feel-good speech. She brings the truth of God's word just like it is and attempts to use it to penetrate your heart for the cause of Christ. It is definitely different than the feel-good, politically correct society that we live in.

This book, for me. was not a quick read. It was kind of like chewing your food slowly and trying to digest the information before you moved onto the next bite, or a dessert at the end of a meal, that you eat slow, in small bites, to savor every bit. So, it took me a while to get through this book even though it’s a very thin with only about 150 pages.

Elisabeth calls us to follow Christ, to seek after the things that are above, to set our focus on the cross and what Christ has done for us and allow that to move us towards love and compassion and seeing other people through the eyes of God and staying away from sin.  I would highly recommend this book if you are looking for a book that will help you grow spiritually.

    1. Appreciated your review, Amy. I'm a huge fan of Elisabeth Elliot, used to listen to her daily teaching on Back to the Bible, even have several transcripts saved in my files, but haven't read any of her books. Maybe I should check into some of them. Hope you and your family are doing well, Amy.
